Hello audience!
(as Tobuscus would say)
Menin tässä taannoin (tänään) kaverini kanssa tekemään diilin siitä, että alamme kirjoittaa blogia nyt vähintään kerran tai pari per viikko. Ihan siinä mielessä, että keväällä olisi tarkoitus suoriutua äidinkielen ylioppilaskokeista mallikkaasti. Olin joskus vielä erinomainen kirjoittaja, mutta nykyään tuntuu, etten pääse enää yhtä hyviin arvosanoihin kuin ennen, joten toivottavasti tästä olisi jotain apua asiaan. Hah!
Uskon myös vakaasti siihen, että elämäni helpottuu tämän myötä päästessäni purkamaan sisällä patoutuvia, vahvoja mielipiteitä jos johonkin tämän ydinjätteen alle jääneen yhteiskunnan epäkohtiin. Buahahahaa, saas nähdä. :D
Mutta joo, on nyt tosiaan syksyn ylioppilaskoerumba pahimmillaan. Ihmiset on maailman epäsosiaalisimpia istuessaan kodeissaan lukien (nii vissii) ja päntäten historiaa, psykologiaa, ruotsia, yhteiskuntaoppia jne jne.. Noista tosin kaikki kokeet on kyllä tainnu jo mennä. :D Any guys, pointtina kuitenkin, että pinnat on kireellä ja stressinlaukeamis päänsäryt pahimmillaan, samoin vitutukset menneiden kokeiden alustaviin pistemääriin. Kyllä, vaikerrus ja valitus koulun käytävillä on sanoinkuvaamaton. Ne kärsivät ilmeet.. Hmm..
Kärsivät ilmeet sikseen ja asiaan! Kaikista eniten närkästystä on nyt herättänyt epäoikeudenmukaiset kielten, etenkin englannin kielen testauksen menetelmät. Näyttäisi siltä, että englannin taitoa mitataan nykyään sillä, miten osaat tulkita kysymykset vastaamaan sitä, miten sensorit, tai no, ylioppilaslautakunta asian näkee. Monet kysymykset jäävät niin tulkinnanvaraisiksi, ettei niistä voi syntyä kuin eripuraa niin oppilaiden, kuin varmasti myös sensoreidenkin kesken. Se ei mielestäni enää ole kielitaidon testausta, kun annetuista vastausvaihtoehdoista ei ota selvää, vaikka koko luetunymmärtämisen tekstin onkin ymmärtänyt. En tiedä johtuuko tämä ärsyttävä monivalintatapa vain siitä, että suomalaiset ovat ylipäänsä niin hyviä englannin kielessä, ettei tekstiäkään enää voi vaikeuttaa vaan on pakko keksiä monitulkintaisia kysymyksiä liittyen tekstiin. Vai eikö kokeiden laatijat vain oikeasti tajua, ettei tässä ole järkeä. (Päällimmäisenä syynä taitaa kuitenkin olla, että monivalinnat on nopea korjata. Huoh..)
Tämänkin syksyn 2011 englannin yo-kokeessa oli parikin tällaista ristiriitakohtaa. Eniten kohua aiheuttanut kysymys tuntuu kuitenkin olevat 8. kohta:
"Marie herself could be charged with trespassing, vandalism or
breaking and entering. Rameau assured her he has lawyers who
will represent her free. Two weeks after Marie moved in, she came
home to find the locks had been changed, probably by the property’s
manager. Everything inside – her food, clothes and family photos
– was gone. But late last month, with Rameau’s help, she got back
inside and has put Christmas decorations on the front door."
Josta kysymykset:
8. What happened at the home where Marie was living?
A It was broken into and she was hurt
B The property manager threw her out of the home
C She spent her Christmas in the home
Tästä siis on ollut järjettömät spekulaatiot, onko oikea vastaus B vai C. Virallisesti oikea vastaus olisi C, mutta niin minun, kuin monen muunkin abiturientin mielestä se on kaiken järjen mukaan B. Tekstissähän ei mitenkään kerrota, että Marie vietti joulunsa kotona??? Siinä vain sanotaan, että hän laittoi oveensa joulukoristeet. Tämähän ei kyllä suoraan kerro siitä, että hän vietti joulunsa kotona? Ja YTL:n mukaan tässä kohdassa pitäisi tehdä johtopäätöksiä. TADAA! Tässä juuri se mitä tarkoitin, eikö ylioppilaskokeissa pitäisi mitata kielitaitoa, ei päättelykykyä? Kysymysten pitäisi olla suoraan luettavissa tekstistä! Kyllä kaikki pystyy varmasti myös päättelemään Marien ehkä viettävän joulunsa siellä, mutta sitä ei sanota suoraan. Mistä voi tietää ettei kohta ole kompa? Sitä paitsi onhan niitä hörhöjä, jotka pitävät joulukoristeita puoli vuotta.. Näiden seikkojen takia vastaus B olisi paljon osuvampi.
Kaikki jotka englantia lukea osaavat, varmasti tajuavat kohdan:

Eikö tästä voi päätellä, että Marie heitettiin ulos? Jos joku väittää, että ulosheittäminen tarkoittaa sitä, että sinut kannetaan niskavilloista ulos asunnosta, niin haloo?? Mariehan ei ollut kotona kun tämä tapahtui, jolloin hänelle henkilökohtaisesti voitu antaa lähtöpasseja. Varsinkin kun hän laittomasti talossa asusti. Tässä tilanteessa se, että lukot on vaihdettu (Mariella ei ole keinoa päästä asuntoon) ja hänen tavaransa viety, tarkoittaa sitä, että hänet on häädetty? Eikö? Toki kohdan "-was gone." voisi ymmärtää siten, että tavaroita ei ollut viety pois, mutta ne olivat kuvainnollisesti "poissa" koska Mariella ei ollut pääsyä niihin käsiksi. Mutta tässä taas tulee esille tulkinnanvaraisuus.
Eri asia on kohta 21. jossa ratkaiseva tekiä liittyi siihen, että skills ja understanding tarkkaan ottaen tarkoittavat aivan eri asiaa. Tieto ja taito.. Tätä en viitsi nyt käydä sen enempää läpi. Kaikki jotka ovat kokeessa olleet kyllä tietävät mistä puhun. Itselleni kohta oli siinä mielessä selvä, että loppujenlopuksi ajattelin näiden kahden sanan ratkaisevan koko tehtävän. Onnekseni oivalsin oikein.
En jaksa nyt käydä enää tätä, jo kyllästymiseen asti jauhettua asiaa, mutta toivon vain, että YTL tajuaa nyt pisteyttää tehtävän 8. molemmat vaihtoehdot, oli sitten vastannut B tai C...

tässä on kommenttia amerikkalaiselta juristilta kolmeen epäselvään kysymykseen, lukekaa jos jaksatte, mutta tyyppi puhuu asiaa!
Question 8. There is no way in hell that this question was written by an American (maybe a Brit, but they aren't as good with the mother tongue as we are). I would assume that the narrative to an earlier question provided a little context to the language that forms the basis for question 8. In any event, my answer would be B. There is no basis for the statement in A that Marie was hurt, so A is out. One of the secretaries in our office picked C, but this also seems wrong. First, Christmas decorations could be put on the front door at any time of the year. Second, and more important, the tense used in the paragraph ("has put") appears to indicate that Christmas has not yet occurred. The tense used in answer C ("spent") indicates that Christmas is already past. B isn't great, either, but it seems "less bad" than the other answers. If the property manager changed the locks on the home (which happens frequently if a tenant does not pay rent), then Marie could be charged with trespassing unless and until she obtained a lawyer to help her with the situation. Also, the point made in (iii) to my analysis to #21 also applies (seeing the word "Christmas" in the last line of the paragraph and in answer C looks like a baited hook; I'm not biting). FYI: two other attorneys in my office also answered B.
Question 21. At least this paragraph is intelligible. The answers, however, leave much to be desired. C seems to be incorrect--the first sentence in the paragraph indicates that jurors don't understand science, but there is more to science than cause and effect. The tougher choice is between A and B. I went with B (one of the other attorneys in my office initially went with A, but then decided B was correct after we spoke). Neither A nor B is great, but I went with B for the following reasons: (i) the topic of the paragraph is really that jurors don't understand science, and B seems closer to this topic (the problem with B is whether not understanding science is equivalent to "misjudg[ing] their skills"), (ii) although A appears to be true based on the example provided in the paragraph, A is really a subset of B, i.e., having the wrong ideas about DNA is an example of jurors misjudging their own skills; therefore, A seems to be the stronger answer, and (iii) from a test strategy standpoint, it just "feels" like the test is trying to lure you into picking A--having "DNA" in the paragraph and the answer is a warning sign. Sometimes the testers will give you an easy question, but more often than not the easy answer is not the correct answer, especially in a reading comprehension test.
Question 22. I should refuse to provide my answer to this question due the fact that the testers have not used the American spelling for "defense". However, because we Americans are tolerant of others, even if they are wrong, I suppose I can forgive the error in judgment. There is nothing in the paragraph to indicate that it is easier to fool jurors into "accepting evidence" (rather, the paragraph mentions that jurors have misguided notions regarding the absence of evidence). That leaves B and C. B seems incorrect (though again my secretary picked it), because the paragraph indicates that there are positives and negatives to the CSI effect for both prosecutors and defense attorneys. Although "at pains" does mean, in my opinion, making a great effort (I'm answering without using a dictionary), the paragraph indicates that defense attorneys find themselves "at pains" to explain a particular kind of evidence (or the lack thereof). This is different than taking more effort to get the defendant free, because, as mentioned above, there are also benefits to the CSI effect for the defense. It is unclear from the paragraph whether the net result of the CSI effect to the defense is to take more or less effort to get the defendant free. Rather, the whole point of the paragraph is that the CSI effect makes it necessary for both the prosecution and the defense to set some forensic facts straight (Answer C). The two other attorneys in my office who took the test also anwered C.
